An exciting development for IBICS!!
IBICS hosted a mini-symposium during the 9th EuChemS Chemistry Congress, Convention Centre, Dublin, Ireland 7th-11th July, 2024. This Congress attracted over 1650 delegates.
This mini-symposium, with a focus on bioinspired inorganic chemistry, comprised an overview of the history and activities of IBICS, followed by four short oral presentations by internationally-renowned scientists from our IBICS community. The presentations highlighted representative examples of the depth and breadth of Irish research in this thriving field. The presentations showcased the crucial roles of metals in biological systems, and their exploitation in developing innovative diagnostic, therapeutic and biomimetic agents as well as their potential as bio-analytical tools.
The mini-symposium was chaired by Professor John Kelly (Trinity College Dublin). Presentations were delivered by:
Professor Celine J. Marmion (RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences): “Targeted metallodrugs rationally designed to overcome cancer drug resistance”
Professor Tia Keyes (Dublin City University): “Metal complex luminophores for G-quadruplex targeting for imaging and phototherapy”
Professor Aidan McDonald (Trinity College Dublin): “Highly reactive synthetic mimics of oxidases”
Professor Susan Quinn (University College Dublin): “Good vibrations for DNA reporting: exploiting the excited states of ruthenium polypyridyl infrared probes”
With thanks to CRC Press Taylor and Francis Group for their sponsorship in which the chair and presenters received copies of the 24th Volume of the series Metal Ions in Life Sciences (MILS) – ‘Targeted Metallo-Drugs: Design, Development, and Modes of Action’ which were presented by one of the co-editors, Professor Etelka Farkas, University of Debrecen, Hungary.
Congratulations to Professor Tia Keyes,
School of Chemical Sciences, Dublin City University
who was the most recent recipient of the
Institute of Chemistry of Ireland (ICI) Boyle Higgins Gold Medal and Lecture Award 2024.
Her Award Lecture was entitled
‘Probes and Platforms for Biophysics; A Chemist’s Solution to Biological Problems’.
